Ministerial Project - access to medicines in Wales

Welsh Medicines Partnership (Contact: Professor Phil Routledge)

7 November 2008

On 30 September 2008 the Health Minister announced that an expert group had been set up to look at the issues around funding drugs on the NHS that are not approved by NICE.

Healthcare Alliances were appointed to facilitate the Expert Group to:

  1. Develop a programme of work to address the issues related to medicines which have not been approved for use in NHS Wales (by November 2008).
  2. Develop a programme of work to address the prescribing of ‘heroic’ treatments during the last months of life (by November 2008)
  3. Engage, initially, with the Cancer Networks, Lead Advisor for Cancer Services and Lead Clinician, in addressing cancer treatments, as the initial priority.
  4. Engage with the statutory clinical Advisory Committees and with other appropriate bodies in developing the programme.
  5. Advise on how the public may be best informed on these issues.
